X Games Athlete Cody Matechuk Delivers World’s First Snow Bike Base Jump
X Games Athlete Cody Matechuk Achieves World’s First Snow Bike Base Jump
On the brisk morning of April 12, X Games athlete Cody Matechuk with a group of friends, formed a path in the snow towards the edge of a large cliff in British Columbia’s wilderness.
With one parachute pack on his back and a second under his snow bike seat, Matechuk raced down the snow-covered path and directly off the cliff’s edge. It wasn’t the first time Matechuk had jumped off a cliff, but it was a first for combining the two extreme sports.
A snow bike is part motorcycle plus part snowmobile.
Both Matechuk and the bike touched down safely, completing the world’s first snow bike base jump.
“It was the most intense thing I’ve ever done,” said Matechuk, who always dreamt of doing a world’s first. “The last conversation I had with myself, in my head, was breaking down the fear.”
The 25-year-old two-time gold medal-winning X Games athlete started motocross at the age of three but only began skydiving at 18.
He is cautious when urging others to follow his path. “There is a lot of behind the scenes that go into it that most people will never see,” he told the Calgary Herald.
Seek out professionals and don’t try it at home,” he advises.
